Top 15 Writing Tips For Web Pages in 2021

Internet is the most readily available resource for information these days. We come across tons of material on different websites all the time, but quality web page content always stands out.

Thousands of content writers create new stuff every day and it is a bit tricky to come up with something that is interesting for the reader and also up to the standard for search engines. There are a number of factors involved before you come up with the perfect concoction for the readers, consumers and optimal search engines.

Following are a few things to keep in mind if you are wondering how to write website content. Hopefully, these points will help you create content that is appealing to read and has marketing value and ranks higher on search engines.

1. Research before you write

Read what has already been written and what you can write to provide better value to your readers. Read the website content from the first three search results of your key terms and learn what they are doing well to rank there. Having a thorough understanding of your subject matter will pay off and give you better chances of writing authority content.

2. Originality is the key

Perhaps the fatal mistake is to copy your content from other websites. This not only brings a bad name to your website but can also severely impact your search engine ranking.

If you understand why your readers are reading your content, you will be able to address their needs in a better way. Take inspiration and maybe the basic ideas even to follow in the footsteps and improvise to create something impressive of your own.

3. Don’t compromise on planning

Always do your homework and research what you are going to write and how to write good content for a website. Collect enough information and relevant ideas and also divide them according to the pages you have to write.

  • Divide it into proper paragraphs, each dealing with one idea at a time
  • Use headings, sub-headings and bullets wherever feasible
  • Numbered lists are also a good idea to keep things in order
  • Breaking text with images or graphics is another way of avoiding long texts in one go

Avoid repetition as it is repulsive and the reader can be offended or bored by monotony and the same thing being said more than once

4. Focus on being precise

Stick to your main idea and avoid unnecessary details and lengthy explanations. People don’t have time to read long texts. They usually prefer precise and compact information that is to the point. Focus on what you are promoting and don’t give additional introductions.

In case of a detailed article, always remember to include catchy headings that give the overview of the contents of your long, long story. This will grab the attention of the visitor who does not intend to go for details but still can get the gist of the content.

One of the best pieces of advice I received when learning how to write good content for a website was writing for people who skim. It is a test of your skill to capture the attention of someone who is just scanning your content and not planning on reading the whole thing.

5. Opt for a simple vocabulary

A text that is stuffed with too many complicated words and terminologies is not likely to hit the audience. Be yourself and don’t try to sound too intellectual. Nobody wants to read those stuffy articles that sound superficial and unnatural.

However, a more conversational tone and candid advice is always welcome. It should be comprehensible for an average person and be appealing enough for the reader to continue till the end.

6. Use keywords naturally

Focus on keywords for better ranking and SEO. This will help in the optimal landing of your webpage among the top searches. High volume keyword selection that is relevant to your website is extremely helpful in this regard.

Also, make sure you use keywords fluently in a natural manner. If need be, use their synonyms or consider writing in a natural flow without using keywords. Search engine algorithms and readers have become smarter over time – they can easily detect when you artificially impose keywords in your writing where they don’t necessarily belong.

7. Make the best of CTAs

Make use of graphics for a call to action – you can use a supporting link or a relevant image that urges your reader more than plain text. An attention-grabbing graphic insertion is always intriguing. Naturally, fit it within your text so that the reader is convinced it is a part of the text, and going through it would be beneficial.

Similarly, insert anchor links fluently within your text. It should be subtly slid in an appealing way that the reader feels compelled to go through it once at least. Don’t make a blunt statement, rather make it invitingly descriptive.

Making appealing statements and promoting your product as the solution to potential problems that people might be facing is a good idea. Devise a strategy for marketing, where you highlight the problems and then, like a magical savior present a decent solution.

8. An improper structure can be a deal-breaker

The difference between the top-ranking web page content and ordinary content is planning. If you thoroughly plan your content’s structure, arrangement, and headings, the likelihood of better search engine ranking increases considerably.

If you present top-notch content in huge chunks of paragraphs, no one is going to pay attention to it. You also have to cater to the audience who is reading your content on smaller screens – even a 4 line paragraph can seem like a huge block of text on a smaller screen.

9. Don’t be afraid to be creative

Creativity is the key to great content, and time and effort spent in this hard work always pay off. Be innovative, even if you have to imitate a given sample. This way, your reader won’t be distracted and would be able to focus on what you have to say.

Promoting a product using unconventional and novel ways is obviously a great move for its marketing. Think hard about how you can present the given information in a better way before you start writing.

10. Intended readers

Always keep your intended readers in mind. While blog posts call for a more casual and candid style, website content writing for promoting a product is different. The age group you are catering and also for what purpose matters a lot in this regard.

Catering to the older age group, you have to use a more formal, respectful and descriptive style. Youngsters, on the other hand, would prefer to have more precise and to the point information. They tend to appreciate modern terminologies and spontaneous tone that relates to their social media norms.

Keeping the typical psychology of a particular age group, gender or strata is a smart strategy. Addressing men and women in the same tone and way might not be very helpful. Similarly, writing long texts with formal introductions and then getting to the point for young adults is never a good idea. They seldom pay attention to details and usually prefer to get straight to the solution. Telling your reader about the best product you have with logic and reasoning, along with a pinch of emotional blackmailing, will definitely work wonders.

11. Syntax errors can be fatal

Writing short, compact and precise sentences minimizes the chances of any grammatical mistakes and decreases the risk of any misunderstanding on behalf of the reader. Long, run-on sentences are a no-no for search engines and also tend to make things complicated.

Syntax errors also leave a bad impression on the reader and make them lose their interest in what you have to say. There are many people offended by bad linguistics in text and are not interested in indulging in reading any further, no matter how interesting the subject itself is.

Spelling and grammatical mistakes are fatal as they show a lack of professionalism. People expect the owners to do their part and not err while hiring someone to write the promotional stuff for their products. This shows a lack of knowledge and lack of commitment and any research in the related field.

12. Avoid plagiarism

Plagiarism covers broad context and includes text, images and other graphic content that have copyrights. Before picking any random images from the wide world of the internet, make sure it does not belong to anyone or has anyone with its legal rights. There are tons of websites and hosts that offer such materials at minimal cost or the ones that do not have any copyright claims by their owner, so feel free to use those. There are a number of tools and apps available that check for plagiarism and make sure all is good to go. Plagiarized content in any form can not only cause to take down your pages or website but can also result in expensive lawsuits.

13. Go through your content again

Like every other piece of writing, content should also be revised carefully and thoughtfully; Making sure it meets the needs of the particular website you are writing it for. Eliminate any grammatical or spelling errors.

Double-check if it is reader-friendly and there is nothing that a reader would have to read again to fully comprehend. If necessary, replace any hard words or more complicated terms with simpler ones to increase consumer absorption. The content should be free of any mistakes and target the right audience and consumers with the right tools and strategies. The tone should be appropriate. The majority of the time, it calls for a balance between casual description along with formal invitation to pay heed to your content or product.

14. Inspire and be inspired

The internet is all open to everyone. Whenever you feel at a loss of ideas on writing content for a website, a quick search on related topics will open a whole new range of novel ideas for you.

Look at all those available samples all you want and analyze different aspects of them, and see what you like and what appeals to you as a reader. Even for images and photographs, you can try taking your own by following the ideas spread on the internet.

15. Proofread, edit and improve

You will be amazed by the edits and improvements you can bring to your content once you look at it with a fresh pair of eyes. Always go through your web content writing once before you make it live, and avail any chances of improvement.

Best of luck with your writing venture, and always remember that good writing always results from heaps of practice.

I agree with most of your points. But specially I agree that we don’t need to use fancy words because it is possible English is not native language for all your site readers.

So, if you have extensive use of fancy English, some of your audience may not even understand what you are trying to convey.

And of course plagiarism should be avoided at all cost.

    thanks for the great writeup.
